Boyd’s – Franktown Pastoral Charge

Committee of Stewards

Summary of Responsibilities

The following information is taken from the United Church of Canada Manual, as well as the Guide for Board and Committee Members of Congregations in the United Church of Canada

Members of the Committee of Stewards are elected by the congregation to have management of the temporal and financial affairs of the congregation.  It is desirable, but not required, that they be persons in full membership of the Church.  The church’s treasurer is a member of the Committee of Stewards.

Summary of Duties of the Committee of Stewards

1.      Assist the Stewardship Committee in securing contributions for local congregational expenses, including the salary of the Minister, required payments to the Pension Fund, Presbytery allocations and the current expenses of the local church.

2.      Disburse the money received for these purposes.

3.      Prepare and present annually to the Official Board and the congregation a properly audited statement of all receipts and expenditures, together with a budget of estimated needs for the ensuing year.

4.      Present regular reports on the financial condition of the congregation to each meeting of the Official Board.

5.      Elect annually a Chairman, a Secretary who shall keep a record of the proceedings and all documents, and a Treasurer who shall keep an accurate record of all receipts and expenditures and receive all monies from envelopes, collections and other sources, and disburse them as directed by the Committee.  The Treasurer shall also be responsible for preparation of the annual financial statement and its auditing.

Members of the Committee of Stewards assist the congregation in its effectiveness by applying good management procedures to the care of the congregation’s finances.  By helping in the planning and execution of the annual visitation of the congregation seeking financial commitments, and by fostering the use of envelopes for regular and systematic giving by members, the Committee manages all the work of the local church.

The Committee of Stewards has the opportunity to examine the amounts of money being spent on the various aspects of the congregation’s work and to make recommendations or suggestions if amounts are being spent disproportionately.
