Boyd’s – Franktown Pastoral Charge
Committees and Groups
The Official Board for Boyd’s-Franktown Pastoral Charge meets annually to receive reports from all Boards, Committees and organizations in the Pastoral Charge and report to the congregations with a recommended budget for the ensuing year and to make such recommendations, as it may consider necessary. Attend to all matters, which are of joint interest to the Session, the Stewards, the Trustees or any 2 of them. Deal with matters not specifically assigned to anyone else in the Pastoral Charge. Communicate any information from any UCC committees to the congregations.
The Chair, Secretary and Treasurer are elected (or volunteer) from the membership of the Official Board.
Ministry and Personnel Committee
The M&P Committee is made up of representatives from each Church comprising the Pastoral Charge. The M&P Committee is responsible to the Official Board and is responsible for the well being of the Pastoral Charge employees and volunteer staff. Acting as an arbitration committee, submitting recommendations to the Official Board, the M&P Committee has no official decision making capability. However recommendations or proposals from the M&P Committee will often be an agenda item at Board meetings and will be discussed and accepted or rejected by that body.
At least one third of membership on the Stewardship
Committee should be from the Board of Stewards.
The Stewardship Committee sets financial objectives for the congregations and
reviews these objectives annually. The Stewardship Committee will also inform
the congregations why funds are needed, and ensure that funds are set-aside
for M&S Fund. The Stewardship Committee will promote and cultivate a sense
of Christian Stewardship among the congregations, organize periodic visitations
of the entire congregations for stewardship purposes, seeking commitment to
the Church. The Stewardship Committee reports regularly to the Official Board
and prepares an annual report for the congregations.
Administer trust funds, which have been given or established for the use of the congregation. Maintain the property of the congregations, including repairing buildings. Trustees' names appear on the Title Deeds in the Land Titles Office, or they are their successors. Familiar with the terms as set forth in the title deeds, and also with any special provisions in trust deeds.
Each church in the Pastoral Charge has its own Session. It is responsible for the oversight of the spiritual interests of the congregation, in conjunction with the minister. Each member of Session should be assigned to a portion of the congregation. Regular visits to the homes of all church-related families and persons, as planned by the Session, will help to cultivate acquaintance with them, will enable the Session to discover any special needs or difficulties with which the church can help, will give Session members opportunity to hear how they feel about the services or worship, and can encourage their participation in the life and work of the congregation.
Each Church in the Pastoral Charge has a Board of Stewards.
The Board of Stewards is responsible to the Session for the maintenance and care of the physical plant; i.e. The Church. The Board of Stewards is made up of representatives from the Congregations and functions as a committee with a Chair, Secretary and Treasurer elected from the representatives.
The UCW is a group of United Church women whose main
focus is helping the Church community, in various ways, providing financial
and spiritual support to their church.
The UCW meets about once a month, except July and August, in one of their member’s
homes, and enjoy dinner meetings semi-annually in June and November or December.
At each meeting, before business is discussed, a member presents a 'program',
which usually consists of a prayer, a scripture reading, and a story based on
that scripture.
Examples of fund raising events undertaken by the UCW in support of their Church
are Church Suppers and bake sales.
Boyd's United Church Sunday School follows the minister's weekly sermon. We have an opening prayer, discussion on the topic of the week and then do some type of art expression on our thoughts of the lesson. We also practice a song and other things for the next special event. Our special events are:
January: The New Year, February: Valentine's Day, March: Spring, April: Easter, May: Mother's Day, June: Father's Day, July/August: Summer Holidays, September: Fall, October: Thanksgiving, November: Remembrance Day, December: Christmas.
We close by giving our offering for the Mission Fund and singing "Jesus
Loves Me". As of October 23rd we'll be holding Teen Bible Study at the
Same time on every Sunday and having a Potluck Supper the last Friday of the
month with parents to share what we have learned.
St. Paul’s United Church Sunday School is divided
into three areas:
Pre-school - Children who are not in school attend a class administered by the
senior youth of our congregation. Pre-schoolers learn basic bible stories, constructive
play, simple songs and do various crafts & colouring.
Grades K to 3 study the ministers weekly sermon, discuss the topic of the week,
take time to know the Bible (learning names of books and layout). Crafts relative
to the sermon are completed to reinforce the lessons learned. “Seasons
of the Spirit” is used as a guide for weekly activities as well as a weekly
devotional relative to the scriptures of the week.
Grade 4 - 8: Senior youth at St. Paul’s discuss the ministers weekly sermon.
Before leaving the Sunday School, an offering is accepted, followed by a prayer.
A special gathering of the up to Grade 3's is to held to celebrate special
occasions and do more challenging crafts for either pleasure or to raise funds
for Church or Community needs.
SPY (St. Paul’s Youth) youth
in grade 4 – 8 meet monthly on Friday evening for fellowship and fun:
- various themes are celebrated; this takes youth beyond Sunday worship. This
outreach is run by parent volunteers and Sunday School Teacher Mary Smiley to
enhance youth church experience and is open to other youth in the community
of the same age group
Boyd’s – Franktown Youth Group
Currently under development, it is intended that the Boyd’s – Franktown Youth be a self directed, adult supervised organization, primarily concerned with Outreach, participation in Sunday worship and community service, serving the needs of Youth between the ages of 13 and 21!!!!!.
Youth from outside the Boyd’s-Franktown Pastoral Charge community are cordially invited to attend.
The St. Paul’s Men’s Group meet on the 3rd Thursday of each month
(except July and August) for fellowship and to discuss ways and means of supporting
their Church.
The men’s group has prepared pancake breakfasts in support of the Franktown
Lilac Festival; Bar-b-que’d hamburgers and hot dogs supporting the St.
Paul’s Special Events committee catering to local Auction Sales, and performed
the duties of grounds keepers on Church property.
Men for both congregations can and do participate in the Men’s Group.
