HISTORY OF BOYD’S UNITED CHURCH

The township of Lanark which opened to settlement in1820 was first settled by people from Scotland, England and Ireland who came up from Montreal to Brockville, across country to Perth and out to Lanark Township.
The spiritual needs of these early settlers were first met by ministers from Perth who came out to "The New Township" and held services in the homes of the settlers. An account is given in a family history left by a Mrs. Hammond (Margaret Boyd) of the first Methodist minister walking out from Perth and holding services in their home, and from that time on services were held from shanty to shanty, and then in the log school?house until the first church was built.
The first Boyd’s Settlement church was built inside the present cemetery, not far from the gates in the year 1832. The original motion which brought about this action was, "We shall build a house for divine worship, which shall be called "The Jackson Street Methodist Episcopal Church" on the 12th concession of Lanark Township, to be built of cedar logs, 26 feet by 36 feet on the inside, the building committee to be F. Stern, Andrew Stevenson, William McGee, and Thomas Jackson."
Later in 1833 another resolution was passed declaring that when the church was not being used by the Methodists, it was to be available for the use of the Church of England, the Presbyterians, the Baptists and the Quakers. No Anglican cemetery had been established, so several of their members were buried beside the neighboring Methodists.
The present brick church was built in 1875. In 1949 a basement was dug underneath the church to accommodate a Church Hall and to instal an oil?burning furnace. Later in 1973 a building fund was established and with many donations of cash and with much volunteer labor, a kitchen was added, a deep well dug and a septic system and washrooms installed.
Boyd’s Settlement Church has always been affiliated with one or more congregations to form a "charge". In the year 1983 it united with St. Paul’s United Church, Franktown to form the ":Boyd’s? Franktown" Pastoral Charge.
